homesteaders #40: barbara & rodney mcfall

McFall FamilyRodney and I are married with six children; Gary (22), Christina (19), Jaylen (15), Jaysen (9), Pearl (7) and Rodney III (6). Only the youngest three children still live at home with Rodney and me.

Rodney was born and raised in Grand Rapids. He is a graduate of Ottawa Hills High School and is employed as a bus driver for MV Transportation.

I was born in Lakeview and raised in Grand Rapids. I graduated high school at Monterey Adult Education in Seaside, California. I am employed with Kent District Library as a circulation assistant.

McFall FamilyOur family moved to the Westside of Grand Rapids about two years ago from Edmore. We have been very happy with the feel of the neighborhood. We have had the opportunity to meet our neighbors and have formed some close bonds with them. Living in the Westside gives us the opportunity to experience many things with our children. We spend time as a family and individually at the Stiel Center boys and girls club, The Other Way Ministries, the YMCA, library and John Ball Zoo. All of these places and more are just a bike ride away.

We recently began worshipping at Servants Community Church.

McFall FamilyOur children all attend Grand Rapids Public Schools where they thrive in academics. Jaysen’ teacher continuously referred to him as her math wizard. Pearl who was in the second grade spent the year reading at the fifth grade level. Ne’Rod spent his kindergarten year being the class clown. They are all looking forward to the new school year.

Our children are active in many things. Both because we enjoy watching them and because we believe children who participate in team sports learn life lessons that will help them to succeed later. Currently all three children are playing baseball with the inner-city league.

McFall FamilyWe are very excited about owning our own home. There are so many reasons we want and need our own home. The many reason being for the stability it will bring to our children’s lives. Jaysen who is entering the fifth grade is at his sixth school! We really need for our children to never have to switch schools again.

People have asked us “Do you really want a 30 year mortgage? It’s as if they don’t see the blessing this is. After all, if we continued to rent and move every couple of years we would be paying rent forever.

We are so grateful to Westown Jubilee Housing for giving us this opportunity and Fair Haven Ministries for putting their faith in our family.
